Iowa is a U.S. state in the Midwestern United States, a region sometimes called the “American Heartland”. Do you know from where the name is derived from? It derives its name from the Iowan people, one of the many Native American tribes that occupied the state at the time of European exploration. It is the only state that has a state abbreviation that consists of two vowels (IA).

Most notably you can visit Spirit Lake, West Okoboji Lake, and East Okoboji Lake in northwest Iowa. To the east lies Clear Lake. Man-made lakes include Lake Odessa, Salyersville Lake, Lake Red Rock, Coralville Lake, Lake MacBride, and Rathbun Lake.

How to achieve your Iowa Teaching Credential?

If you are planning to earn your Iowa teaching credential you will have to complete the appropriate amount of undergraduate coursework and standardized tests, as well as an accredited certification program.

It has an Initial certification which is valid for a teacher’s first two years, Standard, and Master Educator. Both Standard and Master Educator certifications are valid for five years. All categories are renewable

What are the prerequisite coursework needed?

You are familiar that all states require at least a Bachelor’s degree to teach. Iowa has the following requirements:

· Elementary Education (K-6):

You’re Coursework in satisfied and teaching methods for Language Arts, Reading, Child Development, Elementary Curriculum, etc and at least two of the following – Art, Music, Health or Physical Education. You should also require Courses in Child Growth and Development, Elementary Curriculum and Children’s Literature which are also important.

In accumulation, you as a student must devote at least 12 semester hours to a specialization in a single discipline or formal interdisciplinary program.

K-8: You as a teacher who want to specialize in English/Language Arts, Reading, Foreign Language, Speech Communication/Theatre, Health, Physical Education or Music at the K-8 level by completing 24 semester hours in the desired subject area.

· Secondary Education (Grades 5-12):

Your English and Math require 24 semester hours in the content area. Social Science and Physical Science each require 24 semester hours in a specific sub-category, such as Psychology or World History. Alternatively, all Social Sciences can be taught by a teacher with 51 hours distributed through all the subcategories; Science can be taught by a teacher with 30 semester hours in the general field of science, and 15 credit hours in the desired content area.

What are the required Tests for teaching ?

The majority states necessitate tests to show proficiency in Basic Skills as well as in the desired Subject Area. It does not require a Basic Skills test, but requires the Praxis II: Subject Tests to prove content proficiency.
